A city with little space

Barriers for Dense, Shared Sites

Portsmouth is one of the most densely built cities in the country, and most of it sits on an island. Commercial sites tend to be compact, entrances often open straight off a busy road, and car parks are frequently shared by several businesses or residents.

That makes the layout of a barrier more important than usual. There may only be room for one car to wait off the road. Pedestrians may cross the entrance constantly. The same lane may carry traffic both ways. These are all things to solve at the design stage, not after the barrier is in.

For the full description of our barrier service, see automatic barriers in Hampshire.

Where barriers help

Portsmouth Sites We Can Help With

Our work is with private commercial and residential sites. Typical examples around the city include:

Industrial estates in the north of the city

Units around Hilsea and the Airport Industrial Estate, where yards and staff parking need controlling.

Office campuses and business parks

Larger office sites, such as those around North Harbour, often have big car parks that need managing.

Managed residential parking

Apartment developments with residents' bays and a constant stream of visitors and deliveries.

Multi-user entrances

One entrance serving several businesses, each needing their own credentials.

Shops, surgeries and community buildings

Small car parks for customers or patients that are used by everyone else.

Hotels and guest parking

Guest parking that needs to stay available to guests.

Designing for limited space

Layout Comes First

On a tight Portsmouth site, the first question isn't which barrier, it's where. We look at where a vehicle stops while the barrier opens, whether it would block the pavement or the road, and how drivers leave. Sometimes the barrier needs to be set back into the site, or the entry and exit need splitting.

Then we specify the arm length, the right barrier for the number of daily movements, the access method, the loop and safety layout, and the power, cabling and groundwork.

  • ✓Stacking space off the highway
  • ✓Safe pedestrian routes
  • ✓Two-way or split-lane traffic
  • ✓Arm length and support
Detection and safety

Detection That Suits Busy Surroundings

With pedestrians and traffic close by, safety equipment is planned carefully and backed by a site-specific risk assessment.

Safety loops

Cut into the road to detect a vehicle under the arm, so it won't close.

Photocells

An extra safety beam across the opening.

Radar or laser

Specified where loops aren't practical or where pedestrians share the lane.

Traffic lights

Clear signals where one lane carries traffic both ways.

Perimeter is Gate Safe Accredited.

Roger Technology

Reliable Roger Barriers

We install Roger Technology barriers. Their brushless motors are made for frequent use and move smoothly, and the range covers short and long arms for different openings.

LED arm lighting improves visibility on dark or busy roads, many models take battery backup, and there's a manual release if the power fails.

  • ✓Frequent-use brushless motors
  • ✓Short and long arm options
  • ✓LED lighting for visibility
  • ✓Programmed and tested on site
Access control

ANPR

Number-plate recognition for residents, staff or tenants.

Fobs and keypads

Credentials per user or per business, easily cancelled.

Visitors call the right business or flat, or a mobile via GSM.

Push button and remotes

For a reception desk, concierge or a few trusted users.

FAQs

Portsmouth Barrier FAQs

Our entrance opens straight onto a busy road. Can we still have a barrier?

Often yes, but the barrier may need to sit further into the site so a vehicle can wait without blocking the road or pavement. We'll assess this at the survey.

Several businesses share our car park. How does access work?

Each business can have its own fobs, codes or ANPR entries, and the intercom can call the right unit. Users can be managed without affecting the others.

Do you cover the whole city?

Yes, from Southsea and Fratton up to Hilsea, Cosham, Drayton and Farlington.

Is a barrier safe with lots of pedestrians around?

With the right layout, yes. We use safety loops, photocells and where needed radar or laser detection, and design a separate pedestrian route if possible.

How much does it cost?

That depends on the barrier, access control and groundwork. We give a written quote after a free survey.

Will it work in a power cut?

The arm can be released and lifted by hand, and many models can have battery backup.
