Swing Driveway
Gates.
Bespoke swing driveway gates for properties where the entrance has the right opening space, post strength and driveway depth — available as manual gates or fully automated electric swing gate systems.
Are Swing Gates Right for Your Driveway?
Swing gates are one of the most established driveway gate layouts, but they only work properly when the entrance has enough clear space for the gate leaves to open safely. The opening arc, driveway depth, slope, post positions and vehicle turning space all matter.
At Perimeter Fencing and Gates, we design and install timber, metal and steel-framed swing gates across Hampshire, with manual operation or electric automation depending on the property, access requirements and long-term use of the entrance.
For the wider product build, see our bespoke driveway gates page. For complete powered systems, see our electric gates Hampshire service.
Timber, Metal and Steel-Framed Swing Gates
The right swing gate construction depends on the size of the entrance, the required privacy level, the style of the property and whether the gate will be automated now or prepared for automation later.
Timber
Best suited to warm, private entrances where the gate design needs to complement the property rather than look industrial.
Metal
A clean, durable option for more open designs, decorative detailing or properties needing a sharper contemporary entrance.
Steel-Framed
Combines hardwood facing with a stronger internal structure, useful for wider, heavier or automation-ready gate leaves.
Electric
Automated swing gates with motors, controls, safety edges, photocells, intercoms and professional commissioning.
Why Swing Gates Need Proper Surveying
Swing gates place load through the posts, hinges and automation arms. That means the design cannot be judged by the opening width alone. The ground conditions, hanging points, leaf weight, exposure and opening direction all affect whether a swing system is suitable.
If the driveway rises behind the entrance, if parking space is tight, or if the gate leaves would obstruct turning space, a sliding driveway gate may be the stronger solution.
For our installation process, see driveway gate installation. For automation upgrades, see gate automation Hampshire.
How Much Do Swing Driveway Gates Cost?
Manual swing driveway gates can start from around £1,800–£4,500+ for simpler timber gate sets, depending on size, material, posts, hinges and finish.
Installed manual swing gate systems often sit around £2,500–£6,500+. Steel-framed timber gates are commonly around £3,500–£7,500+, while electric swing gates can range from around £6,500–£15,000+ depending on automation, safety equipment, access control and site conditions.
For wider pricing context, see our driveway gates cost guide. It explains why properly built hardwood and steel-framed gates cost more than lightweight DIY gate kits.
Electric Swing Gate Automation
Swing gates can be automated using above-ground motors, underground motors or articulated arm systems, depending on the gate design, hinge position, pier arrangement and the appearance required at the entrance.
Automation should be specified as part of the gate system, not added as an afterthought. The gate leaves must be structurally suitable, the posts must be strong enough, and the final system must include appropriate safety devices and commissioning.
Electric Swing Gates Need the Right Safety Setup
Electric swing gates need suitable motors, control equipment, access control, safety devices and professional commissioning. The gate leaves, posts, hinges and opening geometry must be suitable before automation is specified.
We follow HSE electric gate safety guidelines to ensure full compliance with UK regulations. You can also read our electric gate safety guide.
Swing Driveway Gates FAQs
Clear answers about swing gates, electric swing gates, materials, costs and installation suitability.
How much do swing driveway gates cost?
Manual swing driveway gates can start from around £1,800–£4,500+. Installed manual swing gate systems often range from around £2,500–£6,500+, while electric swing gates can range from around £6,500–£15,000+ depending on gate construction, automation, safety equipment, access control and site conditions.
Are swing gates better than sliding gates?
Swing gates are often better where the entrance has enough driveway depth and a clean opening arc. Sliding gates can be better where space is limited, the driveway rises behind the entrance, or swing leaves would interfere with parking and turning space.
Can swing driveway gates be automated?
Yes. Swing driveway gates can be automated when the gate leaves, posts, hinges and opening geometry are suitable. Automation may use underground motors, above-ground motors or articulated arms depending on the entrance.
Are timber or metal swing gates better?
Timber swing gates are often chosen for privacy, warmth and character. Metal swing gates are often chosen for a cleaner or more open design. Steel-framed timber gates are a strong option where the client wants a premium timber appearance with added structural rigidity.
Do electric swing gates need safety equipment?
Yes. Electric swing gates must be designed with suitable safety devices, controls and commissioning. The correct setup depends on the gate movement, hinge geometry, access points and how pedestrians and vehicles use the entrance.
