Why duty cycle comes first

An Entrance That Works All Day Needs the Right Barrier

Eastleigh's commercial areas are built around the motorway. The estates along Chickenhall Lane, such as Barton Park and the Deacon Trading Estate, are a short run from M3 junctions 12 and 13 and M27 junction 5. Southampton International Business Park sits beside the airport. Across these sites you'll find warehouses with large secure yards, trade counters, and offices with shared car parks.

Those entrances can see a steady stream of vans, HGVs and staff cars from early morning, often with shift changes that bring a rush of movements in a short window. A barrier built for occasional residential use won't last on an entrance like that. Duty cycle, the amount of work the motor can do without overheating or wearing prematurely, is the first thing we look at.

Roger Technology's brushless barriers are designed for frequent operation, which is why we use them. You can read more about the wider service on our Hampshire automatic barriers page.

Typical Eastleigh sites

Where Barriers Earn Their Keep

On distribution and warehouse sites, a barrier at the yard entrance keeps HGV and van traffic separate from staff parking and makes it obvious where drivers must stop and report in. On business parks it keeps visitor and tenant parking for the people paying for it.

Where a whole yard needs locking at night, a barrier can work alongside a gate. We also install commercial gates, and we'll tell you honestly which is the better fit for each entrance.

Specification

Matching the Barrier to the Traffic

At the survey we measure and discuss everything that affects the choice of equipment.

Peak movements

How many vehicles pass in the busiest hour, not just across the day.

Vehicle types

HGVs need wider openings, longer arms and loops positioned for longer wheelbases.

Opening speed

Faster arms reduce queuing at busy times. Longer arms open more slowly, which affects the choice.

Entry and exit

One barrier for both directions, or separate lanes with their own detection.

Supply and network

Mains supply, cable routes and, for ANPR, a reliable network connection.

Ground conditions

Concrete, tarmac or paving, and where existing services run.

Roger Technology

Roger Brushless Barrier Systems

Roger Technology barriers use brushless motors designed for heavy, repeated use. They start and stop smoothly, which is easier on the mechanism over thousands of cycles, and they come in a range of sizes for different road widths.

Options include LED-lit arms for visibility, battery backup on many models, and a manual release. Every barrier is programmed, tested and handed over by us.

  • ✓Built for frequent operation
  • ✓Sizes for different openings
  • ✓Compatible with ANPR and access control
  • ✓Installed and commissioned by our own team

Access and detection

Access Control, Loops and Safety

A barrier on a busy site needs to let the right vehicles through without hold-ups, and it needs to be safe.

ANPR

Opens automatically for fleet vehicles, staff and regular hauliers. Lists can be updated as people and vehicles change.

Readers, fobs, keypads

For tenants and staff. Codes and fobs can be cancelled when someone leaves.

Intercom

Drivers who aren't on the list speak to the site office or gatehouse before being let in.

Detection loops

A safety loop stops the arm closing on a vehicle. Exit loops let vehicles leave without stopping.

Photocells and sensors

Extra protection where pedestrians cross, with radar or laser detection where loops aren't suitable.

Traffic lights

Clear stop and go signals on lanes used in both directions or at busy junctions.

Push button and remotes

Manual control for a gatehouse or reception.

Risk assessment

Every installation is assessed for its site. We are Gate Safe Accredited.

Installation

Groundwork and Commissioning

Our installation includes the civils the barrier needs. The quote spells out exactly what's included for your entrance.

Excavation and foundation

A concrete base for the barrier cabinet and any support post or reader pedestal.

Ducting and cabling

Routes for power, loops and access control, planned to avoid buried services.

Loop cutting

Slots cut into the road surface for the loops, then sealed.

Electrical supply

The barrier needs a suitable supply nearby. We'll confirm what's needed at the survey.

Working around operations

Phased so a working yard can keep running where possible.

Testing and handover

Every safety device checked, users set up and staff shown how it works.

FAQs

Eastleigh Barrier FAQs

We run a distribution site near the M3. Can a barrier handle HGVs?

Yes. We size the opening, arm length and loop layout for HGVs, and choose a barrier rated for the number of movements. Some sites use separate entry and exit lanes to keep traffic moving.

Can ANPR recognise our fleet and our regular hauliers?

Yes. Vehicles can be added to the approved list, and drivers who aren't on it can use an intercom to the site office.

Do you work on business parks with several tenants?

Yes. Each tenant can have their own fobs, codes or ANPR entries, and users can be added or removed without affecting the others.

How long does installation take?

It depends on the groundwork and the access control. We'll give you a timescale with the quote and plan the work around your site.

Is the groundwork included?

Yes, we do the civils ourselves. The quote sets out exactly what's included for your entrance.

Should we have a gate or a barrier?

Barriers are faster and suit frequent traffic. Gates secure the whole opening when the site is closed. Some sites use both. We'll advise at the survey.
